My name is Father Jay Cunnane and as the Pastor for St. Cornelius, I extend you a warm welcome to our faith community. If we haven’t met in person yet, I look forward to getting to know each of you.
I was born and raised in Ireland – which places me in what appears to be a longtime tradition of Irish pastors serving here at St. Cornelius. So, I hope that you will all be accustomed to my accent and understand me!
My formal name is Jarlath Cunnane. Jarlath is a pretty rare name, even in Ireland, and a little hard to say, so everyone knows me these days as Fr. Jay. I do not care for the Monsignor title, so I will know you are really mad at me if you call me that - like my mom used to call us by our full formal names when she was really serious. “Us” would be referring to me and my five siblings. Three of us siblings are here in the United States, as I have a brother in Orange County and one in Chicago. My other brother and two sisters are in Ireland.
I studied at All Hallows College in Dublin for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Our family boast is that I am the fourth generation of our family to serve as a priest here in Los Angeles. The first one started around 1860 and founded St Patrick’s Church in Watsonville, so I figure that gives me some claim to being a native.
I have served in a variety of parishes around Los Angeles and most of my ministry has been in poorer, immigrant, inner city communities. During the 1990s, I spent a few years back in Dublin working on the staff of All Hallows where I had studied.
To connect with me for a conversation or to set up a small group meeting where I can meet you and your loved ones in the parish, please contact the parish office and we will find a time. God Bless you!
